New Year's Eve 2007 : Yet again, we celebrated Hogmanay with a posh dinner and an overnight stay with the 'usual suspects' at the Sommerville hotel in St. Aubin. Jules was still a bit poorly with her cold, and set off for an early nights sleep - with lots & lots of coughing; however we both managed to make it up in time for breakfast on New Year's Day .... !

It has to be said however, that this was an awful lot easier than expected, since breakfast was available until 12 o'clock . . !

Vaughan Town - Gredos '07 : Having twice done stints at the immersion-style, English language course for Spanish speakers organised by Pueblo Ingles, I thought I would try out the same type of programme as offered by Vaughan Systems at VaughanTown. (See: http://www.vaughantown.com/english/indexenglish.asp )

Until the middle of 2006, this programme was offered by just the one, joint company; but in March 2006, Richard Vaughan, the founder, disassociated himself and his parent company, Vaughan Systems, from what then became Pueblo Ingles, and set up his own organisation, called ‘Vaughan Town' at the Hotel Puerta de Gredos, on the outskirts of El Barco de Avila..

This is where I set up home for 6 days with an (almost) equal number of Spanish speakers and native English speakers ... where all you do is talk, talk, talk ... plus, (slightly more than) the occasional bit of late night partying, dancing etc.

Vicki & Leighton's Wedding : Vicki & Leighton provided another opportunity for a wedding 'bun-fight' this year, when they got married at St. Ouen's Parish Church on Friday 14th September 2007.

Since they're both involved in the Air Training Corps, the bride walked down the air to an organ version of The Dam Busters March - with the Royal Air Force March Past being the musical accompaniment after the ceremony.

As Vicki's always had a thing for a man in uniform - aside from the RAF connection - Leighton is also a fire-fighter; so it wasn't surprising that they travelled from the Church to the reception in the back of an operational fire engine.

Stewart's Photos : Following the well established Stuttard trend, to every now and then host family get-togethers - 2007 saw Julie's Uncle & Aunt (Colin & Susan) host a family week in Southern Spain at Cuevas del Tio Tobas - http://www.tiotobas.com/ingles

This hotel on the outskirts of Alcudia de Guadix, is based around a series of cave 'dwellings' - this underground living is an old accepted practice in this area of Spain.

A whole bunch of Stuttards' (plus partners, families & friends) from all corners of the world became troglodytes for various spells during the weeks stay, with the usual barbecues and late-night setting of the world to right.

As with all Stuttard re-unions, there was also the obligatory 'pantomime' performance

Liz & Ronan's Wedding : Well, it took a fairly long-distance romance, ... and required a return from New Zealand for Liz.! ….. but she and Ronan got married at St. Peter's Church on Saturday 5th May 2007.

They decided on a somewhat different style of wedding – on the basis that the girls would get more use out of evening wear, rather than wedding outfits - the dress code was black tie & cocktail frocks.

Their distinctive style continued, with the couple receiving the guests as they left the church, rather than at the reception; and continued with the speeches being made prior to starting the meal.

As Ronan hails from Eire, the thought was that the barrel of Guinness would be for him – as can be seen, this was not to be the case.

A terrific time was had by all, and Mr & Mrs Walsh headed off the next day for a 3 week tour of Italy.!

Koh Chang : We decided on Koh Chang for our late long-haul trip in 2006, getting there via the newly opened Bangkok airport at Suvarnabhumi (pronounded as 'su-wan-na-poom'). After overnighting at the Novotel airport hotel, we travelled the 200-odd miles south east to Trat, before making the short road & ferry trip to the island of Koh Chang.

We spent our time at the Amari Emerald Cove Resort & Spa in Klong Prao beach. As you'll see, we also managed to fit in an elephant trekking session - this was with an outfit called Ban Kwan Chang, some 3/4 of an hours drive away at Klong Son.

Definitely well worth the travel time, as (unlike some other elephant camps) they're based out in the middle of the local scrub jungle, rather than at the roadside. It's a small thing, but really gives the impression that you're off the beaten track.

Please feel free to add any comments to individual photos.

Julie's B'day 06 : Julie's birthday invariably falls around the August Bank Holiday weekend, and to continue the tradition of previous years, we went out for lunch on the Sunday.

Dining in the courtyard of the Old Court House, St. Aubin's, we then repaired back to ours to continue the celebrations, albeit somewhat more sedately than we have in previous years. !

Pueblo Ingles in Cazorla : In July 2006 I managed to blag my way onto an immersion-style, English language course for Spanish speakers. Organised by Pueblo Ingles - Vaughan, a Madrid based language school, they take an equal number of Spanish speakers and native English speakers ... and for 7 days, all you do is talk, talk, talk ... plus, just the occasional bit of late night partying, dancing etc. Full details of the programme and background can be found at http://www.morethanenglish.com/anglos/index.asp

Pueblo Ingles in Valdelavilla : Having thoroughly enjoyed my 2006 stay at Pueblo Ingles (the immersion-style, English language course for Spanish speakers, organised by the eponymous Madrid based language school) I returned for another stint as an 'Anglo' - this time in Valdelavilla at the end of June 2007.

While usually there is an equal number of Spanish speakers and native English speakers; this time there was a slight excess of Spaniards ... who were all connected with psychiatry (either as medics or as staff of the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb ) and we spent the better part of 7 days just talking, talking, talking ... plus, quite a lot of late night partying, dancing etc. . . . . . plus, on this trip, just a little bit of cross-dressing.!

Chiang Mai 2005 : Julie & I flew off for Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand in mid-November 2005 – this was a new area for us, as we've usually done more traditional beach areas of the Land of Smiles.

We’d organised for a week in the city at the Amari Rincome, followed by a further week at the (fairly) recently opened Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi resort in the countryside outside of the city.

Slight problem … in that building of the Colonial Suite we’d booked, had not actually been completed.

We were contacted during our stay at the Amari to inform that they would like to upgrade us to a Villa (with attached private pool) . . . but, as they were fully booked for the last night of our stay, would like to transfer us to the Four Seasons Resort (the only other top-class hotel in Chiang Mai) for the last night.

As a result, we managed to blag some early check-in; complementary dinner at their signature Thai restaurant; round trip limo transfers from the Dhara Dhevi to Four Seasons; and a joint spa treatment worth over £110.

The ‘Loy Krathong’ festival took place during our stay in Chiang Mai – this celebration takes place at the end of the rainy season to honour the goddess of water - and results in small floating offerings (containing incense, flowers, coin and a candle) being lit and set adrift on any body of water.

Additionally in Northern Thailand, they also celebrate ‘Yih Peng’ at the same time. This involves launching hot-air paper balloons powered by small candles, and known as ‘krathong sawan’.

During our initial stay in the city, we were curious about the (initially) occasional small orange lights we could see, which appeared to move at high altitude over the surrounding countryside.

For several days we initially thought these were some sort of surveillance aircraft, over-flying the Golden Triangle area, seeking out drug producers. !

On the main night of this festival (arranged around the lunar cycle) we dined at an absolutely fantastic French restaurant ... and set off our own 'Krathong' on the water, as well as a 'Krathong Sawan' into the night air to join the literally hundreds of airborne offerings.
